Internet Marketing 777 / IM777

Search Engine Optimization has been a hot topic in the internet marketing corner of the world. SEO is a process of choosing the most appropriate targeted keyword phrases that relate to your website to ensure that certain keywords rank high in the search engine results pages. (SERP)

When someone searches for specific phrases or keywords you want the search engine to place your site as close to #1 as possible. This delicate fine tuning involves optimizing your website content with the HTML and Meta tags (meta tags are debatable at this point, and some search engines such as Google do not count meta tags in rankings) and also involves appropriate link building.

Currently, the most popular search engines are Google, Yahoo, MSN Search, AOL and Ask. Search engines keep their methods and ranking algorithms secret, for many reasons, such as so it will create a harder time for people who are looking to exploit SERPs. A search engine uses hundreds of factors when considering ranking of a website. Because search engines are constantly looking for ways to provide relevant and better information in their SERPs, the weight each factor is given may change at any time.

Algorithms from one search engine to another can differ so widely, a webpage that ranks #1 in a particular search engine could rank a lot further down in another search engine. New sites do not need to be “submitted” for search engines to pick up the website (but I always submit the sites I create soon after purchasing the domain, so that my site will have a head start in being crawled).

Just one link from a well-established site will get the search engines to visit the new site and begin to spider and crawl your website. The time frame that this happens is unknown, so again, if you want to get a head start, I would recommend you submit you website to the big search engines (Top 3, Google, Yahoo, MSN).

It is always wise to research keywords you will want to compete with on the SERPs. There are a lot of free tools that you can use such as WordTracker and NicheBot. If you are unable and pressed for time, you can always outsource your work.

If you outsource your work, search engine marketing and optimization companies will look and plan your site and make recommendations to help your website rank higher. If you wish, the search engine optimization company can also provide ongoing consultation and reporting to monitor your website. Usually your search engine optimization expert will work with your web designer to build an integrated plan right away so that all aspects of design are considered at the same time.
